When we first started doing these scenes for Big Fish Games, we were mostly compositing in Adobe Photoshop. Then our process developed by starting a scene in 3D Autodesk Maya to form the base, and painting the other half in Photoshop. Often we pulled in real photographs, using clipart or my own photography to add more texture and detail.
